What Is Arthritis? Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ's)

Arthritis is an inflammation of your joints. The term is used to describe more than 100 conditions that affect joints, surrounding tissues and connective tissues. The most common type of arthritis is osteoarthritis. What are the symptoms of arthritis? The symptoms vary, but most experience pain, aching, stiffness and swelling in and around the joints. Your joints may be red and warm to touch.

How long do the symptoms last?
Joint stiffness usually lasts for about an hour, most notably in the early morning. You may also have constant pain or tenderness.

What parts of the body are most commonly affected by arthritis?
The joints most commonly affected are the knees, hips, hands and spine.

Is there a cure for arthritis?
There is no cure for arthritis. The treatment plan focuses on managing pain, function and the overall quality of life.

Should I exercise if I have arthritis?
Moderate physical activity helps to reduce the pain and stiffness. Physical activity helps you have more energy and generally feel better. Consider activities that have a low impact on joints. These include walking, swimming, riding a bike, gardening and dancing.

Can arthritis be prevented?
Maintaining a healthy weight will lessen the risk of developing arthritis in your knees. Protecting your joints from injury can also decrease your risk.
