Independence Day Celebration honors Veterans

Overton Brooks VA Medical Center, Shreveport, Louisiana, honored Veterans, current service members and their families during a Pre-Independence Day Celebration, July 3, 2018. The ceremony featured raising the state flags of Louisiana, Arkansas, and Texas, the three states Overton Brooks VAMC serves. Representatives from Senator Bill Cassidy’s (R-LA) office, Senator John Kennedy’s (R-LA) office, and Senator Tom Cotton’s (R-AR) office attended.

Following the state flags, Veterans, standing at the ready raised the service flags of the U.S. Army, U.S. Navy, U.S. Marines, U.S. Coast Guard, and the U.S. Air Force. The flag raisings were followed by the National Anthem and service songs of the military branches.

More than 75 Veterans and families gathered for the celebration. Veterans of every war dating back to World War II represented the crowd. “Our nation declared its independence for our families to live free – not just for one generation but future generations,” said Richard Crockett, Medical Center Director, who delivered remarks. “When the colonies celebrated independence in 1776 they had a vision,” he stated. “As we celebrate the birth of our nation, we can’t forget how we began 242 years ago. America’s story of independence is remarkable. We have an amazing story, and our story is known throughout the world.”

When the celebration ended, those in attendance were invited inside for hotdogs and birthday cake, in honor of America’s Independence and thankfulness to Veterans who protect the nation’s freedom.
