Grand Rounds - Patient Safety

Education:

The OBVAMC Surgical Service launched a biweekly Grand Rounds educational lecture series, which is open to all members of OBVAMC and has had attendance from not just the surgical service, but also our primary care, neurology, emergency medicine and internal medicine colleagues.  The Grand Rounds Lecture Series speakers have included our OBVAMC staff as well as national experts such as Dr. Kamal Itani, the surgical service chief of the Boston VA and president of the Association of VA Surgeons and Dr. Jacques Chelly, the Vice Chair of Clinical Research and Director of Acute Interventional Perioperative Pain and Regional Anesthesia at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center.  Our speakers include surgeons, anesthesiologists, neurologists, and nurses including our patient safety manager and the VASQIP surgical quality nurse.

Surgical Grand Rounds are open to all, and unless otherwise noted, held on the first and third Wednesdays of the month, at 3:30-4:30 pm, in the Surgical Service Conference Room 3W18.  Click on the links to view presentations.

Ms. Owens obtained her RN and BS from LSU Baton Rouge and Southeast Louisiana University. She also holds certification as a Chemotherapy Nurse and Legal Nurse Consultant. She has been a registered nurse for 31 years, working at MD Anderson caring for surgical patients and in developmental therapeutics, at St. Luke’s Hospital working in the perioperative arena, and at VA hospitals for 18 years. Ms. Owens has been working in Quality Management since 2001. She returned to the OBVAMC in 2009, to become the Patient Safety Manage, and started the Risk Management Program here at OBVAMC.

Dr. Kamal Itani attended medical school at the American University of Beirut, completed general surgery residency at Baylor College of Medicine and a research fellowship at Duke University.  Dr. Itani previously served as Assistant Dean for Graduate Medical Education and Associate Professor of Surgery in the Michael E DeBakey Department of Surgery at the Baylor College of Medicine.  He was also Chief of Surgery at the Houston VA Medical Center and a staff surgeon at the Ben Taub General Hospital.  Dr. Itani has served in several leadership positions in national organizations, including being the Past President of the Association of VA Surgeons, Course Director for the American College of Surgeons Clinical Trials Course, Chair of the Surgical Quality Data Use Group of VASQIP and on the editorial board of the American Journal of Surgery, Surgery Infection and Hospital Physician.
