Interim Medical Center Director
Mr. Richard Crockett was appointed as the Interim Medical Center Director of Overton Brooks VA Medical Center on February 6, 2017. He joins us from the Central Arkansas Veterans Healthcare System where he is the Deputy Medical Center Director. Mr. Crockett began his VA career 24 years ago as a nurse in medical/surgical and ICU in Salt Lake City, Utah, a large 1-A facility. While there, he served as a clinical informaticist and programmer, and later as Executive Assistant to the Chief of Staff. Mr. Crockett then transferred to VISN 15 in Kansas City, Missouri as the network program Director for Purchased Care and Utilization Management, and then as Executive Assistant to the Network Director. He also served as the Interim network Business Manager and Interim Deputy Network Director. Mr. Crockett then accepted the position of Associate Medical Center Director in Muskogee, Oklahoma. While there, he served as Interim Medical Center Director.
He brings a wide breadth of experience, a broad understanding of clinical and operational issues in health care, and a continued passion for the VAâ€™s mission of caring for our Veterans.

Chief of Staff
Dr. John Areno was appointed Chief of Staff at the Overton Brooks VA Medical Center, effective July 26, 2015.
Dr. Areno has served as the Interim Chief of Staff since March 15, 2015. He is a graduate of LSU Health Sciences Center-Shreveport Medical School (1991), where he also competed a residency in Internal Medicine followed by a fellowship in Pulmonary and Critical Care Medicine.
After completing his training, Dr. Areno spent six years in private practice before returning to the Overton Brooks VA Medical Center in 2003. He was named Chief of the Section of Pulmonary, Critical Care, and Sleep Medicine in 2005 and also functioned as both Associate Program Director and then Program Director for the Pulmonary/Critical Care fellowship program (combined LSU Health Sciences Center and Overton Brooks VA Medical Center).
He served as Asst. Chief of Medical Service from March, 2014, until he was appointed Deputy Chief of Staff in January, 2015.
Dr. Areno is married with four children, and enjoys golfing and guitar playing in his spare time.

Mr. Zachary Sage, MHA was appointed Associate Director of Overton Brooks VA Medical Center (OBVAMC) in Shreveport, Louisiana, effective October 2, 2016. Mr. Sage previously served as the Associate Director of the VA Texas Valley Coastal Bend Health Care System.
Mr. Sage joined the VA in 2007 through the Student Career Exploration Program as a Medical Support Assistant at the Lexington VA Medical Center in Kentucky. He continued his career as an Administrative Fellow at the Michael E. DeBakey VA Medical Center in Houston, Texas. Upon completion of his Fellowship, Mr. Sage continued serving at the Michael E. DeBakey VA Medical Center as a Supply Systems Analyst for the Logistics Management Service, and then as Administrative Officer of the Diagnostic and Therapeutic Care Line. Mr. Sage also served as the Health Systems Specialist to the Associate Director at the Robley Rex VA Medical Center in Louisville, Kentucky.
Mr. Sage earned his Master of Health Administration from the University of Kentucky in 2009. He completed a Bachelor of Arts in Secondary Science Education from the University of Kentucky in 2007. Mr. Sage is a member of the American College of Healthcare Executives (ACHE).
Kai D. Mentzer | 318-990-5149
Mr. Kai D. Mentzer was selected as the Assistant Director of Overton Brooks VA Medical Center in Shreveport, Louisiana, effective January 2017. Mr. Mentzer previously served as the Health Systems Specialist to the Director within the Bay Pines VA Healthcare System (BPVAHCS).
With dedication to the organizationâ€™s I CARE values he has leadership oversight of Environmental Management Service (EMS), Engineering, Emergency Management, Planning, Police, Privacy Office, Prosthetics and Sensory Aids, and Voluntary Service. He also has liaison responsibilities for the Information Security Office, Office of Information and Technology, and the Veterans Canteen Service.
Mr. Mentzer began his federal career in 2003 with the United States Army as a Nuclear, Biological, Chemical and Radiological Specialist. This experience included both domestic and international operations in Afghanistan, South Korea, and the continental United States.
Mr. Mentzer began his healthcare career in 2007 with a non-profit community hospital. In 2009 he joined the VA as a Technical Career Field Intern with the Southern Arizona VA Healthcare System where he would be a Veteran. In 2011 he relocated to the BPVAHCS where he held numerous roles simultaneously, including Assistant Chief and the Administrative Officer for the largest EMS in the nation, overseeing nearly 400 staff and had responsibilities for Housekeeping, Interior Design, a Minor Maintenance team, the Transportation and Grounds Program, and a VISN consolidated Linen Facility.
Mr. Mentzer is a graduate of the University of Arizona, a 2015 graduate of the Healthcare Leadership Development Program, and an active member of the American College of Healthcare Executives and a graduate of the Disney Institute for Health Care Excellence. Mr. Mentzer is married with two children.
Susan Edwards | 318-990-5365
Interim Associate Director Patient Care Services/Nurse Executive
Susan Edwards was appointed as the Interim Associate Director for Patient Care Services at Overton Brooks VA Medical Center, effective January 15, 2017. Ms. Edwards began her employment at Overton Brooks VA Medical Center in December 2003 as a night nursing supervisor. In October 2004, she was selected as the Care Coordinator and established the Home Telehealth Program for OBVAMC. She began working as the Bar Code Medication Administration/Informatics nurse in 2009. In 2010, Ms. Edwards was appointed as the Acting Assistant Chief Nurse for Ambulatory Care and was selected for the permanent position in 2011. Her diverse nursing experience reflects a variety of patient care settings to include medical, surgical, long term, intensive, post anesthesia, emergency, home health and rehabilitation care.
Ms. Edwards has instructed Basic Life Support and Advanced Life Support since 1978 and 1981 respectively. She received her Master of Science in Nursing: Informatics Focus from Walden University in 2009, her Bachelor of Science in Nursing from Northwestern State University in 2001 and an Associate Degree in Nursing from Vincennes University School of Nursing in 1977. She obtained a Rehabilitation Nursing certification in 2000 and the ANCC Nurse Executive Certification in 2013. Ms. Edwards is a member of the American Nurses Association, the American Nursing Informatics Association/Caring, Nursing Organization of the Veterans Affairs and Sigma Theta Tau International Honor Society of Nursing.
